14 November, 2021

The committee appointed to estimate the full extent of damage by the container vessel MV X-Press Pearl which shipwrecked near Sri Lanka’s west coast is expected to present their interim report on November 30. Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) Chairman Dharshani Lahandupura said the 40-member expert committee is headed by a Senior Professor of Environmental Economics. She said the operators of the vessel, X-Press Feeders have awarded the tender to clear the debris on the seabed to Resolve Marine Salvage Company. It has been found that there were 338 pieces of debris possibly linked to the ship, scattered on the seabed. The vessel which was carrying hazardous cargo, caught fire off the coast of Colombo in May this year destroying the marine ecosystem and marine life to a great extent. The salvaging of the ship will be carried out by a Chinese company.
