Sasmi Sithumsa – A high flying achiever

Sasmi Sithumsa is only nine years but she can boast of many achievements in different fields. She is a Grade 5 student of the Lyceum International School in Ratnapura. Sasmi celebrates her birthday on February 27.

This little girl is an author in the making. She has just published her first book , The Seven Colours. The story revolves around seven fairies . They are the red, orange,, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink fairies.

Even though they played together they were not united. A beauty contest was held to choose the prettiest fairy but even after the event the fairies continued to argue. The Sun overheard them and decided to teach them a lesson.

It called upon the gray rain clouds to shower heavy rain on the fairies. The heavy rain made the fairies unite and hold hands. Sasmi said, that the moral of the story is that if you are united you can do many things.

Sasmi is a prolific writer and has almost a hundred stories to her credit. Apples and needles is about two brothers.

The elder brother was mean to the younger brother until he was taught a lesson by the Golden Apple Tree.

These stories clearly showcase Sasni’s imaginative mind and creativity.

Ideas for stories

A bookworm, Sasmi said, that many of her ideas for stories come from the books she reads.

She loves spooky and adventurous books and enjoys the adventures of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five.

Among her other favourite books are The Secret Kingdom and The Black Knight. She also enjoys reading books of knowledge like encyclopaedias as they widen her knowledge.

This little author in the making said, that she has been writing since she was in Grade 1.

She also said, thar even as a toddler she loved books and though she could not read she would pore over the pictures.

Chess

Chess is another passion of Sasmi’s and she started playing chess at the tender age of seven. She has shone at chess and has represented Sri Lanka at overseas tournaments online. She has represented Sri Lanka at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2021. The Asian Youth Chess Championship 2021, rhe Western Asian Youth Chess Championship 2021 and the Queen’s Chess Festival 2021. Sasmi has many achievements in chess at school and at district, provincial and all Island levels.

Sasmi is very appreciative of the mental stimulation she gets from chess. It also helps her concentration said, this talented chess player.

A keen swimmer she is the Under Eight Swimming Champion at her school. Her favourite stroke is the free style.

Gifted with a lovely voice Sasmi is a member of the Lyceum International School, Ratnapura, choir.

This talented and versatile girl has school, district, provincial and all island level level achievements in her chosen fields and has also performed creditably at Best Speaker Competitions.

Sasmi’s parents are Priyangi Rupesinghe, a housewife and Lalith Dharmasena, a gem businessman.

She has an elder brother, Janiru Bathila who is in Grade 9 at the Lyceum International School Ratnapura.

Sasmi is a lover of animals and has a pet cat, Toby. She also has a pet dog, Lisa which is a cross between a German Shepherd and a mixed breed dog.

Sasmi enjoys travel and has unforgettable memories of the Museum at Polonnaruwa and the Thisa Wewa in Anuradhapura.

Sasmi said, a big thank you to her Principal, Sulochana Herath and each and everyone who had helped her to achieve success.
