61 SLTB workers brutally attacked by private bus crews in 2022

22 January, 2023

Sixty-one Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) workers were brutally assaulted and injured by private bus employees last year, said Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena.

The Gampaha district recorded 13, the highest number of incidents, he said.

Twelve incidents occurred in Colombo and eight in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

Dr. Gunawardena told Parliament a few days ago that he would take steps to revoke the route permits of private buses whose employees committed these criminal acts.

He said he would cancel their route licences for two years.

Dr. Gunawardena called upon the authorities, including the Inspector General of Police, to ensure the safety of the SLTB workers, at all times, and take legal action under the Public Property Act against those who attack public transport buses and harass SLTB workers. - CW
