Sri Lanka to scale down participation at Asian Games

12 February, 2023

Athletics will be the main sport to attract attention when Sri Lanka takes part in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8 this year.

Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) will only conduct trials on March 20 and 21 to select their final squad to represent the nation.

However, the athletic team will be forced to field a limited number of athletes (men and women) due to financial constraints. It is also learnt that they will field only a 15-member team.

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) is also likely to send cricket teams for men and women, rugby (men) while kabaddi players and wrestlers are likely to win medals.

There are 40 sports including swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, baseball and softball, basketball, boxing and 61 disciplines at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. During the 15 days competition, athletes will compete for 482 gold medals.

The economic situation in the country will have a strong impact on Sri Lanka’s participation at the Asian Games and the NOC hopes to limit the number of athletes to 100.
