Richmond leg spinner Yuri Koththigoda 5 for 14 in 2.1 overs

Leg spinner Yuri Koththigoda had excellent figures of 5 for 14 in just 2.1 overs as Richmond College recorded a 38-run win over their traditional rivals Mahinda College in their annual one-day cricket encounter played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Koththigoda who was brought in to bowl as their seventh bowler finished with best figures of five for 14 runs that completely changed the course of the game.

The wicket included that of Mahinda’s most successful opener Tharusha Dilshan who scored 65 runs off 99 deliveries with six fours and a six.

Batting first Richmond scored 238 for 9 wickets in their 50 overs with their openers Chehan Subasinghe scoring 54 off 74 balls with five fours and a six and Nikil Jayaweera chipping in with 50 in 96 balls with five fours.

They also put on an opening partnership of 100 runs in 23.2 overs. Skipper Malsha Tharupathi scored 31 runs in explosive stay off 14 balls with three fours and two sixes while Sharon Abhishek hit 21 off 25 balls.

Chasing 239 runs for victory, Mahinda managed to get only 181 runs in 42.1 overs.

At one stage Mahinda were 153 for 5 wickets in 38.1 overs but Koththigoda who was the National under-19 player came to the front to destroy Mahinda’s innings with 7.5 overs to spare.

Skipper Malsha Tharupathi played a supporting role to Koththigoda and captured 3 for 41 in his 9 overs.
