Title : Hindi Basata Pahasu Magak

Author : S.G. Viveka Samarasinghe
An author publication

You probably take a dictionary for granted as a necessary part of your life. Writers compile dictionaries as they are needed by the people. Many excellent dictionaries are available for English learners. They enrich and extend lexicographical principles established long ago. Although the time may come when a general dictionary will be inadequate to meet all the needs of our complex society, there will always be a need for some kind of general dictionary to learn any language properly.

Apart from English, French and German, Hindi is quite popular in Sri Lanka. It is taught at many universities and the Indian Cultural Centre. Even if you have not learned Hindi in the classroom, you will want to know the meaning of Hindi words. The necessity arises when you watch Hindi films and listen to melodious Hindi songs. Hindi Basata Pahasu Magak will be useful for both students learning Hindi and others who are interested in the language.

Hindi Basata Pahasu Magak is essentially an English – Hindi –Sinhala Dictionary which can be of immense help to the learner. This is, perhaps, the first trilingual dictionary as far as Hindi is concerned.

Before becoming a lexicographer, Viveka Samarasinghe mastered the Hindi language at Vidyalankara University. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Mass Communication. Therefore, she is singularly qualified to compile a trilingual dictionary of this magnitude.

Viveka Samarasinghe was a familiar figure at Lake House when she was working as a Senior Sub Editor for the Sarasaviya film weekly. She has also written several other books such as Mukesh Nomiyana Geetha, Rakhi, Uttara Bharatheeya Rasamasavulu, Mahabharatha Kaviyo, Kandulu and Sanwardhanaya saha Sannivedanaya Sameekshana. She has also played an active role in the activities of the Indian Cultural Centre and Samastha Lanka Hindi Sammelanaya.

Hindi Basata Pahasu Magak is available at leading bookshops.
