Book review: Megha’s eloquent memories

5 November, 2017

My colleague Meghavarna Kumarasinghe, known to us as Megha, has written more than 100 articles for almost all the English newspapers here in Sri Lanka. These articles cover not only distinguished sporting personalities, but also prominent academics and leading media personalities.

The Eloquent Memories is intended for readers in the following sectors - sports personalities, politics, and appreciations of other distinguished members who rendered yeoman service to society.

Author Meghavarna was a versatile sportsman who participated in many sports such as, rugby, athletics, cadetting and cricket, and came quite close to playing 1st eleven cricket. He climbed up the ranks with a lot of effort and managed to play Junior cricket.

Megha joined the CH & FC rugby team and according to records, played for the 2nd, XV of this prestigious club the Kabaragoyas, from 1969-1971. Unfortunately, I was not in Sri Lanka to watch his heroics during this period.

Being a jack of all trades, he was actively involved in several college activities, like the Old Boys’ Association (OBA) and served on the executive committee from 1978 to 1984. Thereafter, he was the joint secretary of the Senior Old Anandians from 2010 to 2014. He was also the Rugger Manager and Media Secretary of the Old Anandians Rugger wing.

Megha has a passion for writing and I remember reading his lucid articles long before I embarked on my writing career. In this book, he has managed to put his passion into practise.

One outstanding aspect of his writing, is that he pays a lot of attention to detail. Megha is a diligent writer, who will keep going till the cows come home and last but not least he has the knack of being at the right place at the right time.

This compilation of many interesting articles would make fascinating reading for everyone. It would certainly benefit old boys, present boys, well-wishers, media personnel, historians, environmentalists, religious leaders, sports personalities past and present.
