LA BAMBAS CD TO MARK GOLDEN JUBILEE

18 March, 2018

It’s been 52 years since La Bambas were founded. But Priya Peiris, Lasla Fernando and Erinton Perera decided to wait patiently until bandmate Rolinson Ferdinando-residing in Canada arrived on holiday recently, to celebrate this landmark with a CD comprising 18 tracks. The album is unique in that it comprises many Latin American favorites, international hits and two English originals.

The CD produced by La Bambas, was launched and distributed by Sooriya Village - famous for ‘Sooriya’ records produced way back in the 70s.

The ceremonial launch took place at Sooriya Village on Sunday (March) 4 in the presence a large enthusiastic gathering of well wishers and invitees.

Lasla, Priya and Erinton spoke about their musical journey. Udena Wickremasooriya of Sooriya Village paid a tribute to the La Bambas for their musical contribution. Yohan Fernando, son of Brian also spoke about the bonding of the band members.

Present were Brian Fernando’s wife, of the late band leader, in whose memory this CD was launched. It was indeed heart warming to see Malsiri Wijesuriya, yet another member participate and join the rest of the band mates to perform that day, despite his illness and disability.

Major General Haren Perera -an ardent fan of La Bambas, Merril Fernando former Latin American song specialist, Raymond Fonseka of ‘Samanalayo’ were among the special invitees.

“This compilation may not have mass appeal, but the CD is meant for the avid music lovers” Priya pointed out.

The La Bambas original line up endured a virtual lifetime together as an inseparable outfit with no breakaways. “This is because music was always an enjoyable pastime and never a money making venture for each one of us” said Priya.
