Wesley College powered by a chanceless 160 by right-hand batsman Thilina Perera took major honors in the Centenary encounter with St Joseph’s College which ended in a draw at Campbell Park yesterday.
Both teams shared the ˜Bryan Claessen-Arthur Hakel Memorial Trophy which was awarded for the first time with this encounter. The Josephians electing to bat first declared their first essay at
268/9. Wesley continuing from their overnight score of 57/2 were in trouble at 98/5 when Thilina Perera and Movin Subasinghe (38) put on a 110-run partnership for the sixth wicket which was followed by a seventh wicket stand of 115 between Perera and Thimira Jayasekera (38)
that took the game away from the Joes. Perera’s 160 came off 225 balls with 28 boundaries and two sixes. Lakshan Gamage bagged five wickets for the Joes while skipper Harin
Cooray was rewarded with three scalps. Ruchika Dangalla captured three wickets and Sakuntha Perera grabbed two wickets to have the Josephian reeling in their second innings at five wickets down for just six runs and a minimum of ten overs to go when Nipun Sumanasinghe and Pahan Perera prevented Wesley from forcing a victory.
