Kandy Sussex champs
Kandy’s Sussex College did well to win the inter-Sussex badminton championship for the fifth time at the Thomian Indoor stadium in Mt. Lavania.
The champion team comprised some top badminton players who were guided by coach Darshana Bandara and principal M.B.P Embogama.
Central Province second
Central Province did well at the 44th national sports festival athletics meet, which took place at Polonnaruwa where they were placed second, with 46 gold, 34 silver and 53 bronze medals. They won the men’s bodybuilding, chess men and women, hockey men’s and women’s, judo men’s, rugby men’s and table tennis men’s events.
Spinners clinic for juniors
The KDCA coaching committee has made arrangements to have a spinners clinic for schools in the district. Having identified the importance of correct techniques of spin bowling, under-15 cricketers who played in the recent concluded under-15 group will be given a opportunity to attend this programme.
Malcolm Perera former Director of Sri Lanka cricket coaching along with other coaches will conduct this programme.
Kandy YSC sports events
Kandy YSC are organizing a rugby, cricket and a football tournament in memory of E.W. Balasuriya who was a great benefactor of Kandy sports.
E.W. Balasuriya was the founder of Kandy Lake Club and Kandy RFC. These two clubs produced top sportsmen in rugby, cricket and iron sports. ‘EW’ was a product of Dharmaraja College and Ananda College, where he excelled in cricket as a fine left hand opening batsman.
Arshan wins gold at World Worcester
M.U.S. Mohamed Arshan of St Anthony’s College, has made Kandy proud, by winning a gold medal at the World Gold Ki Full Contact championship at the World Worcester - Wuma World Ring Sports in England, on October 5. He is a former ruggerite of the Antonians and also played for Kandy SC.
Kapila continues as rugby manager
Former Sri Lanka player Dilhan Kapila Silva will continue as the team manager of Kandy SC once again. Kapila who learned his rugby at Isipathana College, represented the senior team in 1995, 96 and ‘97 as a lock forward and wing forward. Straight from school he moved to CH and FC in 1997. The following year he joined CR and FC and played for two years. He also represented the country.
Sylvestrians not happy at boxing meet
St. Sylvester’s College boxers were not happy at the end of the TB Jayah meet which ended last week. According to their POG both Trinity and St. Sylvester’s were joint champions, but at the last moment the Schools Boxing Association claimed that one of the boxers had taken part in a kicking boxing meet and he was disqualified. Sylvestrian M.M. Faris was best boxer and best loser R.M.T. Raymond of Bandaranayake Central College Veyangoda.
Bimandee most outstanding
Bimandee Bandara of Hillwood Girls College Kandy who won the under-18 girls event, was the most outstanding player in the girls event in the second I & D all island junior ranking table tennis championship. Kingswoodian Chandupa Alahakoon was the boys under-18 champion.
