The Ladies College U-17 champion team comprising Sethara Ambawatte, Arani Cooray, Priyasha Unambuwe, Anika Seneviratne, Rheanna David, Aanya Perera, Saheli Hapudeniya, Rayaca Taiballie and Maneka Madunayake  

Defending Champions Ladies College swept aside the opposition in commanding style as they won both the under 17 and under 19 team events at the Schools Open National Tennis Championships at the SLTA courts this week.

Ladies drew with Bishop’s College in the first round and won the five match tie 3/2 with national champion and Sri Lanka’s number one ranked women’s player Anika Seneviratne giving them the perfect start by easily beating Savini Jayasuriya 9/2.

Sethara Ambawatte then beat Roshintha Perera 9/2 and Sathi Silva beat Sangavi Sabesan 9/0 to give Ladies a clean sheet in the singles.

Bishop’s won both the doubles matches with Seranya Mediwake and Witini de Alwis beating Priasha Unamboowe and Aruni Cooray 9/8 (7/3). Senthi Weerasekera and Isuni Darmasiriwardena then got the better of Maneka Madanayake and Anaya Perera 9/4.

Ladies College also beat Methodist College 3/0, Muesus College 3/0, St Bridget’s 3/0 and met Bishop’s for a second time in the final which they won 3/1 to clinch the championships once again.

Hillwood College Kandy upset St Bridget’s Convent to take third place. In the Boys under 17 St Peter’s College beat Royal College 3/1 to be crowned champions and Ananda College beat St Sebastian’s College 3/0 in the third place play-off.

In the girls under 17, Ladies College beat Visaka Vidiyalaya, Muesus College and Gateway College to defend their title successfully.
