Ex-football captain Peter Ranasinghe no more

20 November, 2022

Former Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) football captain Peter Ranasinghe passed away in Australia where he was residing with his family. He was 88 years old.

A product of St. Joseph’s College, Ranasinghe was considered a player with immense in-born talent and represented the country as a schoolboy in 1953 at the Asian Quadrangular in Burma. History records that he was the only player with boots in the team.

In the following year in 1954, Ranasinghe captained the Ceylon team at the Asian Quadrangular and his team drew the match against India 1-1 and defeated Burma 2-1 while losing to Pakistan 2-1.

Some football commentators called him a “great” for his unmatched skills on the field of play.
