Abysmal Anandians give Joes and Johanne a joyous eighth win

23 February, 2020

A mix of solid show from St. Joseph’s College, their skipper Johanne De Zilva’s six wickets and two centuries proved too hot to handle for Ananda College as the host team recorded their eighth outright win of the season by an innings and 25-runs at Darley Road yesterday.

Shevon Daniel (117) and Sheran Fonseka (102), had dealt the damage with the bat along with the visitors digging their own grave and paying the price for a poor performance they are collectively to be blamed of.

Ananda batting for the second time within the day lost their first man with the scoreboard reading only two. The free-falling wickets then started off with the spell by Johanne De Zilva.

He was rewarded with two more victims in very quick succession for bowling with fire as it was an abysmal reply from the Anandians who had not reformed from the first innings lesson. The visitors never resuscitated and had virtually surrendered as De Zilva was in a wicket-taking mode and unstoppable sending batsmen nearly every time he returned to bowl.

Ananda in their first essay facing a tall ask reached stumps on the first day in a decent position of 104 for three.

It was only on the second and final day their procession frequented with the Joes troubling them at all times. However a virus-like hit had caused a collapse with the majority departing for cheap returns. Earlier the Joes winning the toss and batting pilled 377 losing eight wickets as 219 runs alone came from the bats of centurions Daniel and Fonseka.

Brief scores:

St. Joseph’s 377/8 dec (Shevon Daniel 117, Sheran Fonseka 102, Dunith Wellalage 70, Deneth Nissanka 3/77)

Ananda 247 (Hansaja Jayasinghe 78, Saviru 40, Ashian Daniel 5-50) and 105 (Johanne de Zilva 6 for 36)
