Parliamentary polls : JVP to contest under National People’s Power banner

8 December, 2019

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will contest under the National People’s Power banner in the upcoming Parliamentary elections while retaining the ‘compass’ symbol.

According to JVP MP Vijitha Herath, the NPP has commenced its election organisation work at the grassroots level. “We will contest the elections as the NPP, according to our long term plans,” he said, adding that the party has started organising its grassroots level offices and active members. Despite the set back at the Presidential election, Herath said unlike in a Presidential election, the general election will take a different path. “There is a sense among the public that the NPP must have a strong representation in Parliament. Therefore, we believe the result will be different,” he said.

The MP said the party will not only give nominations to those who are not only capable but who are also willing to make sacrifices. The NPP led by the JVP is a front of 28 organisations led by the leftist JVP which was formed ahead of the Presidential elections held in November.
