While heavy rains developed as a result of cyclone Amphan which is far away from the country, Sri Lanka is to face the South Western monsoon by the end of May, Duty forecaster at the Department of Meteorology, Janaka Kumara told the Sunday Observer yesterday.
From May 23-25, the rains will be less and due to the prevailing wind pattern. An increase in rain is expected after May 25. “Until the beginning of the South Western monsoon, we can expect this rain condition in different parts of the country. The monsoon will start either end of May or beginning of next month and will prevail till August,” he said.
Due to the disaster situation, three people from Ratnapura and another person from Galle district died due to floods and landslides since May 19. As of Friday morning, 142 persons from 34 families in Rathnapura districts were in seven safety locations.
Cyclone Amphan has now entered India and Bangladesh killing more than hundred people in both countries. In the West-Bengal State of India, 60 per cent of the entire population is affected by the cyclone.
